Literature Text

You remember the time long ago when you had met a boy named Britain. You were a young teenager and exploring the vast forests of your nation on a lovely spring day. You ran around, telling all the creatures you saw ‘good evening’ and ‘hello’, not really looking for anything in particular; it was just a stroll to see all the beauty you could before the day ended. However, the deep blue sky started to grow dark as night peeked through. You weren’t really afraid of anything in the darkness, because you simply believed there were no evil or vial monsters in these parts. You slowed your pace and looked around for a place to sleep for the night, when suddenly a light glowing in between the gaps of two trees and off into the distance caught your eye. You grew very curious and walked towards it. When you arrived, you discovered it was the lamp-post that had been placed there when you were born. You honestly didn’t remember where it was from, and hadn’t seen it in what seemed like ages. After a moment of just staring in awe at the post, you heard something coming towards your direction. It crushed the leaves on the dirt and grass as it made its way closer and closer to you. That’s when you faintly saw a young boy, whom looked similar to you in age and size, emerge from the shadows of the trees and darkness. You stood stiff; you didn’t recall seeing a son of Adam and Eve in Narnia for years, and you were sure you were the only nation around here. He looked rugged and filthy, like he had fallen and was pushed around in the dirt, and his clothes were damp. You ran up to him and asked him if he was okay. He certainly didn’t look like it.

"I’m fine, just a rough ride here. By any chance you know where we are?" the youngster asked.

"…Narnia," you hesitantly replied as you both slowly inched towards the radiant light of the lamp, until it brightened your view of the stranger. He had these vibrant emerald colored eyes, and messy blond hair. He was rather cute, but he had these incredibly thick, and I mean THICK, eyebrows that didn’t look like they belonged on his face.

"Ah, okay. I’m glad to finally know where I am. I’m Britain... Who are you?" he looked at you and asked. You felt a bit confused; everyone around here could easily tell that you were the personification of the land they were walking on.

"Can’t you tell? I’m Narnia, the embodiment of this land," you said.

"Oh! I see! You’re also a nation like me! Nice to meet you, Narnia." He smiled and stuck out his hand towards you. You just stared at it, wondering why he was offering nothing as he held out his hand. His grin faded and he gave you a questioning look.

"You’re supposed to take my hand and shake it; it’s a greeting," he ensured. You carefully grasped his hand and felt the motion of him lifting your wrist up and down. After a moment, he let go and you were amazed by such a simple but kind greeting.

"Wait, so we’re the same? Both spirits of the land?" you asked him with a soft look of hope at the chance of finally finding another like yourself.

"Yes, if that’s what you want to call it. There’s plenty of us; we’re all are populated by people and animals," he explained. People? Like humans?! Sons and daughters of Adam and Eve? You hadn’t seen any since King Frank and Queen Helen died. There wasn’t a single one left in Narnia, and you had a very baffled look on your face to express your confusion.

"I’m sorry, you must be mistaken. Humans don’t populate Narnia… They haven’t since the ones who raised me died." you said sorrowfully.

"I-I’m sorry for your loss… Then what does live here? Just animals?" Britain asked in shock.

"Well, yes, they do, but mystical creatures reside here as well. Living and talking, all of them, including some of the trees. Is that not normal?" You raised your eyebrow.

"Bloody no! That’s not normal!!!! Animals don’t communicate with us, and there certainly aren’t any ‘mystical’ beings that live in us! Only humans," he explained. You grew quiet and tilted your head down, eyes focused on the grass underneath your feet. Were you really that different? He suddenly spoke, jolting your attention towards him.

"C-Could I see one? One of these mystical creatures or the animals that speak?" he asked with interest in his eyes. You quickly realized he was telling the truth. You were daft compared to him.

"Umm, I suppose," you replied, not thinking it was a particularly bad idea. You told him to wait there a moment, and then sprinted into the forest looking for anyone you could find. You noticed a small flying mint bunny and ran up to it. It was frolicking in a small patch of mushrooms, but stopped and smiled when it saw you.

"Good evening! I was wondering if I could have a moment of your time so you could meet someone?" you asked the floating rabbit.

"Sure, anything for you, Lady Narnia," it replied as it started to follow you back to the lamp-post. As you walked out of the shadows with the winged bunny, Britain’s jaw hit the floor. The rabbit was surprised, too.

"You found a human?! Or is he a nation, like you?" it asked.

"He is the same as me," you answered.

"It’s like magic! It really does talk! And it’s got green fur and wings! There certainly aren’t any of these in the normal world!" he explained.

"Wait! What do you know about magic?!" you asked. You were once warned by the wise Aslan that magic was used by the immortal queen, Jadis. The mention of such evil made you worry instantly at the sound of the word.

"Well, I’m a wizard. In my country, many study the art of magic and practice it," he replied, as if it wasn’t deadly or abnormal.

"Do other nations know it and how to use it?!" you asked, full of concern.

"Hah. No. The others don’t believe in such a force and its existence. They’re rather stupid if you ask me. Magic is amazingly useful," he told you, showing the passion for magic on his excited face. You exchanged worried expressions with the mint bunny.

"The magic here is evil, and is only used by the witch of ice," the bunny said fearfully. You nodded in agreement.

"Oh come on, it’s not that bad… Just look," he argued, taking out a stick from his boot and waving it. Light spun around and sparkled into the shape of a rose, until it formed the solid state of the flower. Britain handed it to you, and you stared at the glowing petals in awe.

"You can keep it." He smiled. You glanced up to return a grin and thanked him, but were secretly suspicious that it could be poisonous. He put the wand back into his shoe and saw the slight worry you had about the flower.

"It’s not going to hurt you. It’s not dangerous, just avoid the thorns."

"A-Are you sure?" you asked as you fiddled with it.

"Yes, I’m sure," he answered. sounding slightly annoyed. You looked back down at the rose and smiled.

"Okay, then I shall keep it forever," you replied, and his heart skipped a beat.

"You really don’t have to. It’s just a lame flower!" he exclaimed, acting rather tsundere.

You shook your head, "No, it’s lovely," you said gently.

After that the two of you and the flying mint bunny chatted a bit more and sat down next to the lamp-post. The thought suddenly occurred to you that you didn’t know how he even got here.

"Excuse me Britain, but how did you get to my land? You said it was a ‘rough ride’ here?"

"Oh, I was given these mysterious rings." He held out his left hand in which he was holding two rings, one yellow, and the other green. "When I put the yellow one on, I transported to a bunch of ponds. I was looking around for a way back, when I fell into one and landed onto the grounds of these woods. It was rather strange! When I got up, I looked around again, and saw this lamp-post, then met you," he explained. The whole story sounded oddly familiar to you, like you were told something like it before years ago.

"What happens when you put the green one on?" the rabbit asked. Before Britain could answer, you cut in.

"It’ll take him back to from which he came. The king and queen told me once about these rings; how they led to the birth of me. They were supposed to be held and protected by a magician from a different world…" you trailed off. All fell quiet, until Britain interrupted the silence with a question.

"Would you ever want to visit this ‘different world’, Narnia?" He looked straight at you and waited for a response.

"Perha-"

"Don’t," he interrupted, his face growing weary. "It’s filled with war and violence… People hardly get along with each other and face many problems." His look turned from you and drifted to the grass.

"But it could be interesting! To see humans again, and to be able to talk to and see other nations, like us. I could expand my knowledge and learn new cultures!" you argued.

"N-No! You can’t do that! That would only endanger you and your creatures! What if the other nations wanted your land and invaded you and hurt you?! There’s too big of a risk!" he yelled.

"Well… If I decided to go… Would you protect me from all the war and problems?" you asked boldly. His blushed, and his green gaze bored into your (e/c) eyes. You stared back at him, causing a bit of tension between the air.

"Narnia… I couldn’t," he said softly. Your hope began to fade. "But I could come back and visit you… so you aren't lonely…" he added, avoiding your gaze. A smile spread across your face.

"Really? You would come back?!"

"Well, I’m sure I could if I made time to."

"Then take me along! I’ll remind you to not forget about Lady Narnia, and we can see her often!" flying mint bunny declared. "Just use your magic to turn me invisible in your world!"

"I-I guess I could do that… would it be okay if I took her?" Britain asked you. You nodded with the smile still plastered to your face.

"Alright then! Well, it’s nearly dawn... I should be heading back," he said as he took the green ring out and waited for your approval to leave. You nodded, but before he slid the ring onto his finger, you quickly hugged him goodbye. When you pulled away, his face was a deep pink color.

You giggled as he reconstructed himself and said, "I promise you I’ll see you soon." He disappeared as dawn gleamed and painted the sky with light and the color of blue.

"You better keep your promise," you mumbled as you glanced down at the sparkling rose.
